Ashley Young is great player - Martin O'Neill
By Marshall Dyton | Mar 23, 2010

O'NeilAston Villa coach, Martin O'Neill paid tribute to his winger Ashley Young for his outstanding performance this season and believes there is no any other winger who is bright as his starlet.

Young was vibrant on Saturday when O’Neill’s orchestra were held 2-2 by struggling Wolves in a Premier League clash.

"I thought his delivery was terrific. There must have been at least eight or nine really dangerous balls that he put in there,” the manager told club’s official site.

"He made the angle for the first goal - feinting to go inside then coming out and whipping it right across the box - it was fantastic.

"I think he has been great - but not just against Wolves. That was a wonderful performance by him but he is the one that drove us on brilliantly against Reading in the second half and he and James have been exceptional the last few months

"I tell you what I am pleased with - it's his overall game. He is the very first one to get back into position and you look at him. He is about nine stone wet through.

"But he comes back, does more than his share of work for us, he will help out in the left-back and right-back position and his overall game is terrific.

"I don't think there are too many people playing wide at this minute that are shining as much as he is."

Many people claim that Ashley Young lacks confidence when he is on international duty but O'Neill dismissed suggestions and said Capello would select some of his players this summer.

"There has been talk that when Ashley goes away with England he is not the same vibrant fellow he is with us,” he added.

"It is just something that seems to emanate on the rumour mill that he doesn't exude the same self confidence.

"If that is the case, I understand it. When you get someone believing in you - which I do in Ashley - sometimes when you go away and are mixing with a group of other people and are naturally vibrant, you don't want to be the same character because you think those great players England possess have already done it.

"There is a tendency to be a wee bit quiet but it doesn't mean you should desert your own character.

"But he also doesn't have to go and show off with England. All he has to do is go in and perform in the manner he has for the club because that is what Mr Capello is doing. He is picking players on club form."
