Following media speculations about John Terry alleged affair with an ex-girlfriend of former Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge, England Coach told the Chelsea captain that his role was over.

Capello met Terry at Wembley on Friday in a showdown meeting.

"After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," reads Capello’s statement on the Football Association's website.

"As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behavior. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

"What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice.

"John Terry was notified first."

However, Capello announced that vice-captain Rio Ferdinand will take over the role, although he is struggling with injuries.

He further said that there is nothing to stop him to change decision as he is the one also who had chosen vice-captain.

“When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice," he added. "There is no reason to change this decision.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank The FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team.”

In his remarks Terry said he salutes Capello’s decision and promised to continue giving everything to the club.

"I fully respect Fabio Capello's decision. I will continue to give everything for England," he said in his statement.

Despite the decision, Terry is still Chelsea captain following his boss’s previous assurance saying Terry's position as captain of the Blues is still on.
